The customer contacted us after noticing water pooling on their garage roof and damp patches appearing on the garage ceiling. The existing felt covering — installed around 2010 — had developed widespread blistering across the entire surface, with two areas of felt completely split at the upstand junctions. Water was ponding in the centre of the roof where inadequate falls prevented drainage toward the single outlet. Our inspection revealed that the trapped moisture had caused two sections of the chipboard decking to delaminate and soften, meaning a simple re-felt wouldn't solve the problem.
We recommended a complete GRP fibreglass flat roof replacement with new insulation and decking repairs. After stripping the old felt and cutting out the damaged chipboard sections, we installed new 18mm marine-grade plywood to replace the failed areas. Kingspan 75mm PIR insulation was laid across the entire deck with tapered sections creating a positive fall toward a new double outlet. The GRP system — Cure It resin and chopped strand mat — was then applied in a single seamless layer, taken up and over all upstands and trimmed with aluminium edge profiles. The result is a completely jointless, fully bonded membrane that will last 25 years minimum with zero maintenance.
The homeowner now has a flat roof that sheds water instantly, has no joints to fail, and looks immaculate. The insulation upgrade means the garage stays noticeably warmer — they've since converted part of it into a workshop. Total project time was one and a half days, completed with minimal disruption. This is a typical example of the flat roof repairs we carry out across the Ulverston area.
We used the Cure It GRP roofing system — a BBA-certified polyester resin reinforced with 450g chopped strand mat. This creates a rigid, fully bonded membrane that is completely waterproof, UV-stable, and fire-resistant. The system carries a 25-year manufacturer guarantee and has a proven track record across thousands of installations in Cumbria's demanding climate. For more on this system, see our GRP fibreglass roofing page.
Kingspan Thermaboard 75mm PIR insulation provides excellent thermal performance, bringing the garage roof up to current Building Regulation standards. Tapered insulation boards create the positive drainage falls that the original roof lacked. Marine-grade plywood decking replaced the failed chipboard sections — rated for humid conditions and providing a stable, moisture-resistant base for the GRP system. All fixings are stainless steel throughout.
